Brexit, or the hazardous future of British farmers after the CAP: United Kingdom, when poverty and social exclusion become the norm.

Millions of Britons are being pushed below the breadline as food prices skyrocket, with thousands struggling to feed themselves and their families.

What is the future of agriculture in a country that abruptly leaves the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) after having benefited from it for forty-six years? By leaving the European Union (EU), British farmers lose several billion in European aid linked to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

Hunger is trivial in the UK and in every country around the world.

Latest figures from the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal Food prices increased by 19.1 per cent in the 12 months to March 2023, the sharpest jump since August 1977.

Globally, according to a report by the United Nations (UN), world hunger is on the rise and could have affected up to 828 million people in 2021.

Along the same lines, a recent World Bank International Poverty Lines Adjustment Fact Sheet states that:

“The new line, effective from fall 2022, is now at 2.15 dollars. Thus, anyone who has less than $2.15 a day is considered to be living in extreme poverty.”

Yet the juxtaposition with the cheeky luxury lifestyle of a minority is heartbreaking.

“Extreme poverty increases as billionaires’ fortunes balloon by $2.7bn-a-day (£2bn)

The richest 1% of Britons hold more wealth than 70 per cent of Britons.

The richest 1% have pocketed $26 trillion (£21 trillion) in new wealth since 2020, nearly twice as much as the other 99 per cent of the world’s population” a latest Oxfam report reveals.

The name “Oxfam” comes from the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief, founded in Britain in 1942.

Oxfam is a British-founded confederation of 21 independent charitable organizations focusing on the alleviation of global poverty, founded in 1942 and led by Oxfam International.

Oxfam International was formed in 1995 by a group of independent non-governmental organizations.

They joined together as a confederation to maximize efficiency and achieve greater impact to reduce global poverty and injustice.

In London, charities are overwhelmed by the number of people who have fallen into precariousness due to the high cost of living.

France

Figures show food inflation is already at 15% in France. Now there are warnings prices could rise even higher. It is believed 7 out of 10 common food and household items rose by more than 10% between January and November 2022 due to inflation, a new report shows. Some, such as: toilet paper, rose by considerably more (25%).

In Africa

Statistics show staple food prices in sub-Saharan Africa surged by an average 23.9 percent in (2020-2022) the most since the 2008 global financial crisis.

In the United Kingdom, crisis and hunger are also eating away at the middle class.

The country is in the grip of a permanent economical, social, energy, political crisis. Which has the particularity of affecting all populations and not only the most fragile.

According to a recent survey, half of residents say they skip meals and go hungry.

According to a United Nations (UN) report, the world’s population is expected to reach 10 billion by 2050.

Yet the latest edition of The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report estimates that the world is losing ground in its fight to end hunger and malnutrition.

Hence the urgent and crucial nature of accelerating the green development of the agricultural sector to feed a growing world population.

Agriculture as a primary solution for sustainability from an environmental, economic and social point of view.

According to United Nations food and agriculture experts, we need to produce 50 percent more food to be able to feed  the global population.

The only way to achieve this goal is to increase crop productivity, through science and innovation.

If we improve agricultural and food systems, we can improve people’s livelihoods, health and well-being, and strengthen the health of ecosystems.

Yet the Earth Summit held in Rio in 1992 was a historic event that resulted in agreements to guide sustainable development around the world.

According to the first principle of the 1992 Rio Declaration on Environment and Development:

“human beings are at the center of concerns for sustainable development. They have the right to a healthy and productive life in harmony with nature”.

Decades later, humans have still not achieved this fundamental goal.

Millions of people are still unable to benefit from  ‘a healthy life in harmony with nature’.

The whole world experiences in real time this identity of collective hunger once described in Germinal, one of Émile Zola's novels in Les Rougon-Macquart novels series. “Wage-earning is a new form of slavery… Increase the salary, can we? It is fixed by the iron law of wages, at the smallest indispensable sum, just enough for the workers to eat dry bread and produce children... If it falls too low, the workers die, and the demand for new men brings it up. If it rises too high, too much supply causes it to fall... It is the balance of empty stomachs, the perpetual condemnation to the prison of hunger. » The Bridge MAG. Image

Peace and food security are intrinsically linked

‘The FAO has been working in this field since its creation in 1945 in order to eradicate hunger in the world.

José Graziano Da Silva:

Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, quotes the founding fathers in these terms:

“The Food and Agriculture Organization was born from an aspiration to peace, as well as a desire to alleviate  poverty .

The two are interdependent. Gradually freeing humanity from poverty  is essential to achieve a long  lasting peace. »

These words are still relevant after 78 years.

The eradication of hunger and the improvement of human nutrition MUST  be at the heart of  all Governments concerns.

A labor shortage, mainly due to Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic, threatens UK agriculture and food security.

The agricultural sector is one of the most important in the British economy.

For a universal wage increase.

The eradication of hunger and the improvement of human nutrition requires an upward revision of wages.

Workers in the UK and around the world are overly hit by inflation, which in turn leads to lower real wages and higher taxes on labour.

The ILO (International Labor Organization) Global Wage Report 2022-23 studies the impact of inflation and Covid-19 on wages and the purchasing power of employees.

An average drop of -0.9% with large regional variations and a greater impact for low incomes. For three years, humanity has found itself confronted with simultaneous crises: the pandemic linked to Covid-19, the rise in the cost of living which began in 2021 and the outbreak of war in Ukraine in February 2022.

The eradication of hunger and the improvement of human nutrition MUST be at the heart of all Governments concerns. The population is starving and is fed up of political rhetoric and speeches. For the survival of the human species, The Bridge Magazine STRONGLY urges the British government and Governments around the world to URGENTLY pass on laws allowing employees in all sectors of employment and all walks of life to benefit from a significant salary increase. As a reminder, Émile Édouard Charles Antoine Zola was a French writer and journalist born on April 2, 1840 in Paris and died on September 29, 1902 in the same city.Considered the figurehead of naturalism, he is one of the most popular French novelists, the most published, translated and commented on throughout the world.  The Iron Law of Wages, The theory was first coined by Ferdinand Lassalle in the mid-nineteenth century. (1825-1864)

What Ferdinand Lassalle meant by the iron law of wages is that the average wage does not exceed the vital minimum necessary, which stated that all attempts to improve the real income of workers were futile and that wages perforce would remain near the subsistence level.
